Local Attractions in Ipoh, Malaysia

Ipoh, this peaceful town that not known by many tourists like you, actually has many local attractions that worth for a visit. I know tourists are looking forward beaches and sunshine when traveling to tropical countries like Malaysia. Although Ipoh don't have this, but it provides peacefulness, relaxation, choices of delicious food that you never get enough of, historical buildings art, adventure to limestone caves etc.

Oh yea, many people complaining to me that there's nowhere to go in Ipoh at night. But the fact is they don't know where to go at night. Therefore, I'll show you places to go in Ipoh at night.

Limestone Caves…

Most of the hills around Ipoh are limestone hills. Have you heard of the stalagmites and stalactites? They are basically special-shaped mineral forms that often found in limestone caves. A stalactite is an icicle-shaped mass of calcite attached to the roof of a limestone cavern while stalagmites grow upwards from the cave floor and can be conical, fir-cone-shaped, or resemble a stack of saucers. Growing stalactites and stalagmites often meet each other to form solid pillars. The presence of impurities gives colours to stalagmites and stalactites. These natural arts have made limestone caves a local attraction to tourists.

Three main limestone caves in the city are Perak Tong, Sam Poh Tong and Kek Lok Tong. What is this “Tong” means? “Tong” means cave in Chinese.

Historical Buildings…

Ipoh, same as other states in Malaysia, had been conquered by the British before Malaysia declares its independence at 31st August 1957. Till now, there are still a number of buildings standing in the city with combination of the local and the west architecture art. For instance, the Ipoh railway station, Birch Memorial Clock Tower and others.

Shopping…

Ah ha… Shopping malls! This would be an attraction for ladies. ;) Two main shopping malls are available in Ipoh, which are Ipoh Parade and Jaya Jusco. There is a hypermart too, Tesco that located just opposite Jaya Jusco.

Besides shopping malls, there is another interesting place to shop or have a walk. Yes, I'm talking about the Malaysian shopping culture - "pasar malam" (night market). I doubt there is any Malaysian who never been to "pasar malam".

Recently there is another new place for nice bargain (mostly second-hand products) and source for antiques. What I am talking about is the flea market on every Sunday morning.

Gardens...

Despite the growth of the surroundings, Ipoh people remain their calm, steady and relax lifestyle. Therefore, the city has been equipped with gardens to fulfill residents' and your needs. Morning jogging and photo taking will be some of the activities that you would like to do at the gardens.

One of the greatest and oldest garden in the city is the D.R. Seenivasagam Park. And one of the latest and multi-million ringgit recreational park in the city is the Ipoh Riverfront Park.

Lagoon Theme Park...

A new local attraction of Ipoh! It's the first water theme park in Ipoh. Have you ever heard of or been to KL Sunway Lagoon theme park? This is kinda it's branch, another sunway lagoon theme park, but located at Tambun, Ipoh - The Lost World of Tambun!
